Netflix’s “Bridgerton” gave us characters to root for, steamy love stories, and iconic “Regencycore” to inspire our summer closets. Now, we have the prequel spinoff to keep us satiated while we await the next season and it does not disappoint.
The new miniseries,"Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story," premiered on May 4. Set in the 1700s, viewers get the opportunity to learn the backstory of the queen (and how she attained her immaculate fashion sense.)
Ultimately, it’s the little details in the lavish costumes that are signature for a good period piece. (According to Vogue, the hair department created around 1,500 unique wigs for the series.) Similarly, Bella Rosa, under the creative direction of award-winning costume designer Lyn Paolo, was tapped to design custom-made drawstring bags (similar to the Sarah Drawstring) for the show’s costume department.
Bella Rosa translated Lyn's 15 unique bag sketches into stunning pieces of art for the series, matching the costume designer's vision for couture Regency. The bags are seen in the hands of many characters throughout the series, including the Young Queen Charlotte (played by India Ria Amarteifio) and Lady Violet Bridgerton (played by Ruth Gemmell).
*Disclaimer: The sketches displayed are solely Bella Rosa's artistic interpretations of the creative process and are not the actual sketches provided by Lyn Paolo.
Designed with the Regency-era in mind, the drawstring closure is historically accurate. Ladies in the 18th century preferred to carry small bags with drawstrings that were known as “reticules” in France and “indispensables” in England. Each is unique and one of a kind, just like each character’s personality. Each bag was designed by Lyn to meticulously coordinated with each costume down to the smallest detail.
And if we know anything about the world of “Bridgerton,” they love to draw out meaning from every detail. For example, the color palette of dark blues, greys and black drawstring purses were designed with a certain funeral scene in mind. (No spoilers!)
After binging the `six episode series, you may find your closet lacking the Regencycore you desire. While the bags produced for “Queen Charlotte” aren’t available for purchase, The Sarah Drawstring Purse ($1275) is crafted with Italian duchess satin and lavish ostrich feathers.
